How OTCH and OM points work

After the Utility Dog title, Open B and Utility B results earn two kinds of points. OTCH points come from placing first to fourth, and the number depends on how many dogs competed. A qualifying score of 197 or better that earned no placement points still gets 1 OTCH point. Obedience Master (OM) points come from the score alone, for any score of 190 or better.

Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH)

  • 100 OTCH points
  • A first place in Utility B with at least 3 dogs competing
  • A first place in Open B with at least 5 dogs competing
  • One more first place in either class under those conditions
  • The three first places under three different judges, and only one of them at a specialty or Junior Obedience Showcase

Obedience Master (OM)

  • 190 to 191.5: 6 points; 192 to 194.5: 9 points
  • 195 to 196.5: 12 points; 197 to 200: 15 points
  • Each OM level is 200 points, at least 60 from Open B and 60 from Utility B
  • OM1 to OM9, then Obedience Grand Master (OGM) at the 10th level

Example

A dog wins Utility B with 18 dogs competing and a score of 196. The first place is worth 17 OTCH points, and the 196 earns 12 OM points.

AKC points years and cut-off dates

AKC does not use the calendar year for everything. Titles never reset, but rankings, national events and the point schedule each have their own year. Checked against AKC on October 24, 2026.

Common questions

How are OTCH points counted?

From first to fourth place in Open B or Utility B, by the number of dogs competing. For example a first place in Utility B with 17 to 19 dogs is worth 17 points. A qualifying score of 197 or better that earned no placement points still gets 1 point.

What does a dog need to become an Obedience Trial Champion?

100 OTCH points, a first in Utility B with at least 3 dogs competing, a first in Open B with at least 5 dogs competing, and one more first place in either, with all three firsts under three different judges. Only one of those firsts may be from a specialty or Junior Obedience Showcase.

How do Obedience Master (OM) points work?

Scores of 190 or better in Open B or Utility B earn 6, 9, 12 or 15 points. Each OM level is 200 points with at least 60 from Open B and 60 from Utility B. Nine levels give OM1 to OM9, and the tenth gives the Obedience Grand Master (OGM).
