Breed and All-Breed Dog Show Rankings, Explained
What "number one in the breed" and "number one all-breed" mean in the dog show magazines: rankings by dogs defeated, which wins count, and which do not.

Rankings by dogs defeated

The best-known rankings outside AKC's own are the magazine systems, such as The Canine Chronicle's. They do not use championship points. They count how many dogs your dog defeated, and they buy the show results from AKC to do it.
Breed ranking
- Counts only Best of Breed wins - the dogs of the breed your dog beat that day.
- Class wins, Winners, Best of Winners, Best of Opposite Sex and Select wins earn no Breed points.
- Your own dog is never counted, and absent or disqualified dogs are taken out.
All-Breed ranking
- Counts Best of Breed, Group placements and Best in Show - the dogs defeated at each level.
- For a Group placement, the breeds that placed AHEAD of your dog (and their absentees) are taken out of the count.
- Class wins, Best of Opposite Sex, Select and Reserve Best in Show earn no All-Breed points.
The magazines do not publish an exact table for each Group placement, so AKCcalc.com does not calculate these points. AKC also sells a Dogs Defeated report that counts each show's highest award - Best in Show, Group 1st to 4th, or Best of Breed.
