The judge's sheet

Questions 1 to 9 use this one breed judging, from AKC's own sample sheet. Absent dogs, dogs excused or disqualified, and dogs given No Award are never counted.

Dogs (males)

  • Puppy 6-9 months: #9 first, #11 absent
  • Puppy 12-18 months: #17 first, #15 absent
  • Open: #5 first, #7 second, #19 absent
  • Winners Dog #5, Reserve #9

Bitches (females)

  • Puppy 6-9 months: #10 first
  • Puppy 9-12 months: #14 first
  • Puppy 12-18 months: #18 No Award (lack of merit)
  • Bred-By-Exhibitor: #20 first, #12 excused (lame)
  • Open: #6 first, #16 second, #8 disqualified (measured out)
  • Winners Bitch #20, Reserve #6

Best of Breed class (champions)

Present: dogs #23 and #25, bitches #22 and #26. Absent: #19, #21 and #24.

Point schedule for this breed (both sexes): 2 present = 1 point, 3 = 2 points, 4 = 3 points, 5 = 4 points, 6 or more = 5 points.

The questions

Score: 0 of 12

Question 1

1 How many points does Winners Dog (dog #5) earn?

Show the answer

3 points. Winners Dog counts the dogs that competed in the regular classes of its own sex: #9, #17, #5 and #7 = 4 dogs. Absent dogs (#11, #15, #19) do not count. 4 dogs = 3 points.

Question 2

2 How many points does Winners Bitch (#20) earn?

Show the answer

4 points. Count the bitches that competed: #10, #14, #20, #6 and #16 = 5. The bitch given No Award (#18), the excused bitch (#12) and the disqualified bitch (#8) are not counted. 5 bitches = 4 points.

Question 3

3 Winners Dog goes on to win Best of Breed. How many points now?

Show the answer

5 points. A Winners Dog that goes Best of Breed also counts the dogs of BOTH sexes entered for Best of Breed that it defeated: 4 class dogs + 4 champions present (dogs #23 and #25, bitches #22 and #26) = 8. That is 5 points, the most a show can give.

Question 4

4 Instead, Winners Bitch wins Best of Breed. How many points?

Show the answer

5 points. 5 class bitches + the 4 champions present = 9. 5 points.

Question 5

5 Winners Dog wins Best of Opposite Sex. How many points?

Show the answer

5 points. Best of Opposite Sex adds only the champions of ITS OWN sex: 4 class dogs + 2 champion dogs (#23 and #25) = 6 dogs. 5 points.

Question 6

6 Winners Bitch wins Best of Opposite Sex. How many points?

Show the answer

5 points. 5 class bitches + 2 champion bitches (#22 and #26) = 7 bitches. 5 points.

Question 7

7 Winners Dog wins Best of Winners over Winners Bitch. How many points does Winners Dog get?

Show the answer

4 points. Best of Winners takes the GREATER of the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch points - not the two added together. Winners Dog had 3 and Winners Bitch had 4, so Best of Winners gets 4.

Question 8

8 Winners Bitch wins Best of Winners over Winners Dog. How many points does she get?

Show the answer

4 points. The greater of 3 and 4 is still 4. She keeps her own 4 points.

Question 9

9 Winners Dog wins Best of Winners AND Winners Bitch wins Best of Opposite Sex. How many points does Winners Dog get?

Show the answer

5 points. Work out Best of Opposite Sex first: Winners Bitch earns 5 for going BOS. Best of Winners then takes the higher of the points awarded, so Winners Dog gets 5. AKC's tip: if a class dog wins BOS, figure those points before Best of Winners.

Question 10

10 Group example (not this sheet): a Field Spaniel won Winners Dog for 3 points, then placed third in the Sporting Group. The most points any other class dog in the group earned, leaving out the breeds that placed above it, was 2. How many points does the Field Spaniel get?

Show the answer

3 points. A Winners dog that places 2nd to 4th in the group gets the greater of its own breed points and the highest points earned by any class dog in the group from a breed that did not place above it. 3 is more than 2, so it keeps 3.

Question 11

11 Same Field Spaniel, but this time the highest points earned by another class dog in the group (leaving out the breeds placed above it) was 4. How many points?

Show the answer

4 points. Now the group gives more than its breed win: 4 is greater than 3, so the Field Spaniel gets 4 points - a major.

Question 12

12 Grand championship example: the grand championship schedule for bitches is 2, 5, 8, 10 and 15 bitches for 1 to 5 points. 5 class bitches and 3 champion bitches competed, a dog won Best of Breed, and a bitch was named Select Bitch. How many GCH points does Select Bitch earn?

Show the answer

2 points. Select counts all of its own sex, minus one for the bitch that beat it (Best of Opposite Sex): 5 + 3 - 1 = 7 bitches. 7 is at least 5 but under 8, so 2 GCH points.

Common questions

Where do these practice questions come from?

Questions 1 to 9 use the sample judge's sheet and answers from AKC's Counting Points guide. Questions 10 and 11 are AKC's own Group examples, and question 12 is from AKC's Counting Grand Champion Points example.

Does Best of Winners add the Winners Dog and Winners Bitch points together?

No. Best of Winners takes the greater of the two point counts. If the Winners Bitch earned 4 and the Winners Dog earned 3, Best of Winners gets 4.

Do absent or excused dogs count toward points?

No. Dogs that are absent, excused, disqualified, dismissed or given No Award are not counted. Only dogs that actually competed in the regular classes count.
