Lure coursing in plain English

Hounds chase a lure

Sighthounds run a long course of turns chasing a lure, usually two or three at a time. Judges score speed, agility, follow, enthusiasm and endurance.

Placements earn points

The top three in a stake can earn championship points. How many depends on the breed, how many hounds started, and which of AKC's six regions the trial is in.

Majors and the Field Champion

A first place worth 3 or more points is a major. 15 points with 2 majors under 2 different judges make a Field Champion (FC).

Before and after the FC

Junior Courser runs alone; Senior and Master Courser count qualifying runs with other hounds. After the FC, every 45 points in Specials or Veterans adds an LCX level.

How lure coursing points work

A Rhodesian Ridgeback leaping a turn on a lure coursing field while a Basenji waits in a slip lead

A first place in a stake earns 1 to 5 championship points, depending on how many hounds of the breed started and on the region of the trial. AKC splits the country into six regions, and some breeds - Borzoi, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Whippets - need different numbers in each region. Second and third place earn points when the winner earned 3 or more. Peruvian Inca Orchids and Thai Ridgebacks can earn the JC, SC and MC titles but are not on the points schedule, so they earn no FC or LCX points.

2nd and 3rd place

  • Winner earned 5: 2nd earns 3, 3rd earns 2
  • Winner earned 4: 2nd earns 2, 3rd earns 1
  • Winner earned 3: 2nd earns 1, 3rd earns 0
  • Winner earned 1 or 2: no points for 2nd or 3rd

The titles

  • Field Champion (FC): 15 points with 2 majors (a first worth 3, 4 or 5 points) under 2 different judges
  • Lure Courser Excellent (LCX): 45 more points from the Specials or Veterans stake after the FC; every 45 more is LCX II, LCX III and on
  • Junior Courser (JC), Senior Courser (SC) and Master Courser (MC) count qualifying runs - track them in the Title Tracker

Example

Ten Whippets start in the Open stake at a trial in New York (Northeast region). The Northeast Whippet schedule needs 8 starters for a 3-point first place, so the winner earns 3 points - a major - and second place earns 1 point.

Common questions

How many lure coursing points does a first place earn?

1 to 5 points, set by how many hounds of the breed started in the stake and the region of the trial. For most breeds 2 starters earn 1 point and 6 earn 5 points; Borzoi, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Whippets need more starters, and the numbers differ by region.

What does a hound need for the Field Champion (FC) title?

15 championship points including two majors under two different judges. A major is a first place worth 3, 4 or 5 points, and at least one point must be earned in competition with a hound of the same breed.

Do 2nd and 3rd place earn points?

Yes, when the winner earned 3 or more. If the winner earned 5, second earns 3 and third earns 2; if 4, second earns 2 and third earns 1; if 3, second earns 1. No extra points go to 2nd or 3rd when the winner adds points by winning Best of Breed or Best in Field.

What is the LCX title?

Lure Courser Excellent. After the FC, every 45 championship points earned in the Specials or Veterans stake adds a level: LCX, LCX II, LCX III and on.
