The AKC Grand Championship Ranking, Explained
How AKC ranks Grand Champions: which wins earn grand championship points, why points keep counting after the title, and what Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum mean.

What the ranking counts
AKC launched the Grand Championship Points Ranking in October 2010. It ranks the dogs of each breed by the grand championship points they earn at shows by winning Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog or Select Bitch. A dog keeps earning these points after it finishes its Grand Championship, so a busy special can rank high for years.
On AKC's ranking page you can pick one year or the dog's lifetime total, and a dog can be listed in more than one state, by where its owners live. AKC's 2010 announcement listed the top 25 dogs of each breed.
How grand championship points are counted
- Best of Breed counts every dog in competition, both sexes, champions included.
- Best of Opposite Sex counts the dogs of its own sex in competition.
- Select Dog and Select Bitch count the dogs of their own sex, minus one for the dog that beat them.
- The count is read off the breed's grand championship schedule, 1 to 5 points.
Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum
- Grand Champion (GCH): 25 points with 3 majors under 3 judges, defeating a champion at 3 shows.
- Bronze (GCHB): 100 grand championship points.
- Silver (GCHS): 200 points.
- Gold (GCHG): 400 points.
- Platinum (GCHP): 800 points, and every 800 more adds a number - GCHP2 at 1,600.
