AKC ribbon colors, award by award

Every AKC show and trial uses the same ribbon colors, so you can tell what a dog won from across the room. Class placements go blue, red, yellow and white for first to fourth. The awards that come after the classes each have their own color.

Ribbons in plain English

Blue, red, yellow, white

First to fourth place in a class, and in the Group ring too. Same colors at every AKC show, obedience trial and field event.

Purple means points

The purple Winners ribbon is the one that earns championship points. Purple and white is Reserve - the backup if the Winners dog's points are ever cancelled.

Purple and gold is the breed's best

Best of Breed goes on to the Group. Best of Winners is blue and white, Best of Opposite Sex red and white, and Select light blue and white.

Green is a Q

In obedience, rally and agility, every qualifying score earns a dark green ribbon - you are competing against the standard, not just the other dogs.

Common questions

What color ribbon is Best of Breed?

Purple and gold. Best of Winners is blue and white, Best of Opposite Sex is red and white, and Select Dog and Select Bitch are light blue and white.

What does a purple ribbon mean at a dog show?

Purple is Winners Dog or Winners Bitch, the only awards that earn championship points. Purple and white is Reserve Winners, which gets the points only if the Winners dog is later disqualified.

What color is a qualifying ribbon in obedience, rally or agility?

Dark green. Every dog that earns a qualifying score gets one, whatever its placement. Placements one to four are still blue, red, yellow and white.

Where do the ribbons on my rack come from?

From the wins and runs you save in the AKCcalc.com calculators, kept only in this browser. Nothing is uploaded, and the rack updates as you save more.
